NatHERS 6 Star Home Energy Rating

The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) is a star rating system (out of 10) that rates the energy efficiency of a home based on its design. NatHERS promotes increasing the thermal performance of homes, and aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of residential buildings.

A 6-star Rating is generated through NatHERS approved software and takes into account the usage patterns of a room, the layout of the house and any insulation and construction materials used in a dwelling. A 6-Star rated dwelling is considered the gold-standard and is the preferred method of achieving energy compliance.

NatHERSE Star Ratings are used by homeowners, builders, certifiers and councils to meet the mandatory energy efficiency requirements outlined by the NCC, to advise on the efficiency of various designs and to advice prospective buyers on the home they are interested in buying.

Why you need an energy rating

The Australian Federal Government introduced energy rating provisions to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions produced for household energy usage. The energy rating provisions outlined in the National Construction Code (NCC) have been developed to reduce energy consumption by developing minimum performance standards for new dwellings.

If you are building a new home, renovating, or making an addition to your residence you will need to meet minimum state and territory building requirements based on the NCC. A NatHERS accredited assessor will be able to do a home energy rating under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS/6-star) and should have knowledge in alternative pathways such as the Verification Method (VM) and Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) pathway options.

NatHERS is the gold standard for energy efficiency and is the most used pathway to demonstrate compliance. A video explaining NatHERS can be found on the NatHERS Administrator website.

All energy efficiency reports should show the energy performance of the dwelling and pathway used, show the artificial lighting calculations and any rainwater tank and/or solar hot water service requirements.

An experienced assessor should be able to weigh up the benefits of each pathway and provide you with design recommendations to meet compliance.

The relevant building surveyor or local council will require documentation to demonstrate compliance with the energy efficiency requirements. It is the job of the assessor to ensure the documentation clearly addresses all requirements.
